Rick & OPM left the heat and humidity of the Florida summer to visit the Northeast this past Labor Day weekend, and what a wild and wonderful time we just had!!!...First up was the Lincoln Park Fire Hall in Reading, Pa on Saturday with a dance sponsored by the Polish American Heritage Association of Berks County. The hall was jammed to capacity with polka lovers and they sure made our first trip to the Reading area a memorable one. Special thanks to "Papa John" & Sally Bruchak, Dolores Taras, Walt the "K", Kim, Linda Wrobel, and all the others who made us feel so welcome.

Next up on Sunday was the big festival of the National Shrine of our Lady of Czestochowa, in Doylestown, Pa, just north of Philly. What an awesome crowd, literlly in the thousands, were there to welcome OPM to their first appearance in the area. Thanks to the one and only "T.K." Frank Proszowski for bringing us up to this fantastic event.

Finally the weekend wrapped up on Labor day, to a homecoming of sorts for Rick, as the OPM went further north to upstate New York, and the Yesterday's Royal restaurant at Sylvan Beach, N.Y. , just between Syracuse and Utica. A simply unbelievable crowd was there, not only capacity for the restaurant, but with folks wrapped around the porches and looking into the windows to get a glimpse of the band and dancers. Proprietor Pat Goodenow reported to Rick that the day was an all time record attendance for a polka dance, and the people in attendance, including family and friends of Rick and Lauri (some of whom we haven't seen in over 30 years!!), really made this day a sentimental and nostalgic one. What an incredible venue for polka music. Anyone who has not yet visited this place should make plans to do so soon. Special thanks again to Pat Goodenow, (a true gentleman) for treating us so good, also the the one and only Syracuse area D.J. Bob Pietrucha, for hosting and making this event happen, and also Utica D.J. Gary Sroka for his part in the promotion.

Thanks to the thousands of polka fans who showed up Sat., Sun., and Labor Day. You are the reason we keep doing what we do. We love you all, and appreciate your support and acceptance.

Finally, in addition to the regular OPM members, Rick would like to thank our special guest musicians that really made the weekend rock, including John Stevens (on loan from Double Shot), awesome drummer Matt Gury from Detroit (yes Dan's son), the one and only Al, Al, Al, Al Piatkowski on accordian (no one better!!) and his brother Rob on trumpet, a nicer guy and better trumpet player could not be found anywhere. Guys you really made this weekend a memorable one....Let's do this again soon.

On behalf of Rick, Lauri, and all of the OPM, we extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the family or our friend, fellow musician, and Webmaster, John Jeski. John was not only an accomplished musician and bandleader, but a good friend to the OPM, and worked tirelessly and patiently with us to develop and maintain our websight. He left this world far too soon and will be missed dearly. Rest in peace dear friend.

Back at the Villages on Dyngus Day (and more!!)

Some exciting news for all our friends and fans from around the Villages area. OPM will be back, at long last, for the annual Dyngus Day celebration at Lake Sumter Landings, off of Morse Boulevard, from 5-9PM. As usual, admission is free, and happy hour is from 5-6 with 2 for 1 drinks. Be sure to get there early, as anyone who’s been to this affair knows the seats go fast, and as in the past, there will probably be in excess of 1,000 people in attendance. Joining Rick & OPM for that night only will be the one and only “Pan Jozef”, Joe Oberatis, back from a recent weekend in Chicago. So join us for a great evening of fun, experience the beautiful ambiance that onlt the Villages has to offer, and come party with OPM in the happiest Dyngus Day celebration this side of Buffalo…

Now for the even better news…for all you folks asking when we’ll be back for regular dates at the Villages…we have been promised several dates throughout the year (just like we used to), so check back to our schedule link soon for all the future appearances throughout ’07 at both Spanish Springs, and Lake Sumter Landings.

On behalf of Rick & Lauri Piotrowski and all the OPM, we want to wish everyone a very Happy & Blessed Easter, and see you all on Dyngus Day !!

On behalf of the entire OPM band, I'd like to thank all the polka D.J.s, columnists, fellow musicians and bandleaders, and supporters throughout the country that helped spread the word about our recent national TV exposure at the Capital One Bowl halftime show New Year's Day on the ABC network.
My family and I were at the game to witness the performance of our song "Florida Sun", from our latest CD "Working Like Dogs", and while it no doubt was a thrilling experience, there was a little concern that it might not have made it on TV for fear of being pre-empted by a commerical, score update, or such. Thanks to all the calls and e-mails I received, we were assured that the song was on, and in it's entirety!! What made the whole event even more thrilling was the fireworks and fanfare that accompanied the song, which was the finale of the medley...what an awesome experience!! Special thanks and congrats as well to Gene Mitchell and the Big Coconut Band, who did us proud with their rendition of our song, and Bruce Hart of ESP productions, and all their cast members, who did a spectacular job with the sound, choreography, and all the various logistics an event such as that demands.
Should anyone be interested in obtaining a copy of the show, log on to . Thanks again to all that watched, and sharing our moment in the (Florida) sun!!
Happy and Blessed New Year to all,
Rick Piotrowski/OPM

Some exciting news to report from down in Florida. Just recently, Rick Piotrowski, leader of the Orlando Polkamagic, was contacted by ESP productions, producers of the halftime show for the Capital One Citrus Bowl, one of the premier college bowl games in the country. They requested permission to use a song off OPMs recent CD “Working Like Dogs”, titled “Florida Sun”, to be played in it’s entirety, as part of a four song medley called “Postcards from Florida”, which will be aired nationally on all ABC
network affiliates. The game is scheduled for 1:00 PM eastern time New Years Day, and the halftime show should be sometime around 2:30.

The song will be performed by a group called Gene Mitchell and the Big Coconut band, a popular Jimmy Buffett-esque Florida recording band, in front of a national T.V. audience estimated at 17 million people, and 65,000 live attendance, and Rick and the guys are thrilled to have Gene and the Big Coconut Band perform OPM’s version of the song . For more info on Gene and his band, log on to their websight at

“Florida Sun” is a re-make of a popular 60s beach tune “California Sun” recorded by the Ventures. Rick changed the lyrics, added accordion and concertina to give it a progressive polka flavor, but had his son, Ricky, Jr. put in the electric guitar parts, and kept the 60s style organ sound to keep the “beach party” feel. The result was an infectious, upbeat polka/rock style tune that has been embraced by the younger, “extreme-push” polka audiences.

Rick and the entire OPM hope that the polka industry shares their excitement of this upcoming national exposure to polka music, and thanks polka fans everywhere for helping to spread the good news !!
